Demand for diagnostic imaging continues to outstrip workforce capacity across the NHS, with clinical radiology facing a 32% consultant shortfall and substantial reporting backlogs. While 2D x-rays remain the front line for suspected fractures, anatomical superimposition frequently leads to equivocal findings, repeat clinic visits, and avoidable escalation to scarce cross-sectional imaging.

In a newly published feature for RAD Magazine, the potential of low-dose Digital Tomosynthesis (DT) to resolve this bottleneck at the point of care is examined. By delivering slice-based 3D anatomical detail during a patient’s initial assessment, targeted tomosynthesis could resolve equivocal extremity cases on the spot, potentially releasing over one million CT and MRI appointments annually in England while protecting high-end scanners for complex pathways.
